Recorder Karate Beads
To earn a Recorder Karate Belt, students must perform each song with their
LEFT HAND ON TOP and demonstrate 4 of the following 5 skills:

Proper note length (rhythm accuracy)

Correct pitches and finger placement

Accurate articulation

Breath support and tone
-
Specific musical elements notated: dynamics, tempo, repeat signs, change in articulation

- Take it slow - don't speed up
- Keep the recorder in your mouth until you're done playing the note

YELLOW BEAD – Page 6, Line #5, “Hot Cross Buns”

- Count a steady beat in your head
- Take a deep breath and hold out the long notes the proper length
- Keep the recorder in your mouth until you're done playing the note
- Repeat the entire song (go back to the beginning)
ORANGE BEAD – Page 7, Line #4, “Au Claire de la Lune”
Don't forget to...
- Practice the harder measures and THEN go back to the beginning
- Be careful with the jump in measures 3 and 7 - lift 2 fingers to go from G to B
- The first line is the same as the second!
GREEN BEAD – Page 7, Line #5, “Rolling Merrily”

- Fill out measures 5 - 6 BEFORE you start playing (*hint - look at the beginning)!
- The tempo with the accompaniment track is fast, but still precise.
- Use your tongue to start each note
- Hold out the half notes and whole note their proper length (especially measures 2 - 4)
PURPLE BEAD– Page 8, Line #1, “Go to Sleep”

- Start with all 3 fingers covering holes
